The Sacrifice

We were attending our youngest daughter’s open house at her school when Jason received a phone call. Chanel had fallen down while riding her scooter, and she thought her leg was broken. He told her we would be home as soon as we could. We cut things short and headed home.

When we walked through the door, Chanel was lying on the couch in tears. Her right leg looked swollen at the bottom of her shin. We helped her into the car and drove her to the emergency room. After the usual wait in the emergency room and xrays, the doctor came in and said, “She broke her tibia.” Because it was the weight bearing bone, the doctor said she would be in a cast for eight to twelve weeks. Things got worse. They couldn’t set the bone until the next day, because of the swelling.

First thing in the morning, I took Chanel to the doctor’s office where he set the bone and wrapped it in a splint. He said, “I hope you don’t have any big plans for this weekend!” That was the first day of the Anaheim Convention Center Crusade.

After leaving the doctors office, we drove straight to the crusade. That first night, scores of people came forward for salvation after hearing a bilingual message. Many people were set free, delivered and healed while our daughter sat in the care of her older sister in the hotel room in extreme pain.

The next night Chanel was determined to attend the crusade. With the help of a wheel chair she was able to watch what she had waited to see for nearly a year. She responded to the call for healing and then had to return to the hotel room bed.

After dropping Chanel and Celina off in the hotel room, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. In the midst of a great and powerful outreach where the Lord touched thousands of people, my daughter was still in pain.

Then I remembered her words to me at the doctor’s office the day before, “ I wish Jesus would just come back right now so I wouldn’t have to be in pain anymore.” Then she paused and made a powerful statement. “Well, maybe he could come back on Sunday, after the crusade, so all those people can go too.”

Chanel knew if God answered her first prayer, it would mean many would be left behind. But in the midst of her very real pain, she was willing to put her own needs aside so others could have a chance. Chanel, a 13 year old, was willing to make a sacrifice. What are we willing to sacrifice so others can be saved?
